DETAILS

Historically and architecturally unique, Casa del Platero provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a move-in ready piece of Old Mexico, reimagined with a 21st century lifestyle in mind. A rare find, the house is one of only two stand-alone family homes on Playa la Ropa. The compound, which sits on a large lot, features four structures (house, staff quarters, office and laundry/storeroom), approximately 5000 finished square feet. In addition, many outdoor patio areas, a pool and lush gardens provide a private and tranquil setting within the high villa walls. The original structure forming the core of the now 4 BR/3Bath home was designed and built around 1960 by Hector Aguilar, a famous Taxco jewelry designer and architect, who also designed the local Zihuatanejo restaurant and gringo hangout, Coconuts. The house has been meticulously maintained, expanded, renovated, and updated, respecting historical authenticity while adding modern conveniences.

The spacious walled compound is located on a knoll at the south end of Zihuatanejo’s La Ropa Beach. An infinity pool provides a panoramic view overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay and the home itself offers views of both the bay and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains from almost every room. The location is ideal, not only for its combination of spectacular views and ocean breezes, but also for its proximity to the gentle waters of La Ropa beach (just out the front gate) and its convenience to shopping and dining experiences a short barefoot walk on the beach or in the town of Zihuatanejo, a 6-minute drive or pleasant 30-minute walk. Inside the gates, the property is constructed around a central courtyard and fountain, with mature landscaping throughout the grounds.

The ~4,100 square foot main house consists of two stories, each level complete with with kitchen, living room, dining area, bedrooms, baths and covered outdoor spaces. The lower house has 2 bedrooms, each with en-suite full bath; a recently renovated chef’s kitchen with granite countertops, a professional gas stove and custom parota wood cabinets. The upper house has two bedrooms and a shared bath, plus a large patio with spectacular views in every direction.

The two levels have separate private entrances so that two groups can simultaneously and privately occupy both parts, providing an opportunity to rent one level for income while living in the other, or to rent both levels when not in residence. The house has an extensive rental history and the client list can be provided to the buyer upon request. Income from rentals has historically more than covered all home-associated expenses, including staff salaries.

Additional structures are located on the property: A separate casita currently houses the staff, a wonderful couple who have a long history with the house and who maintain the garden, do basic repairs, cook, clean, pay the bills and taxes, and keep detailed financial receipts. The casita is attached to a large storage room; another structure houses the laundry and additional storage.  A well/pump-house guards one of the few natural fresh water sources in the area,  providing water for the extensive gardens. A covered carport/driveway inside the villa gates provides secure parking for 2 vehicles.

The home is move-in ready, and comes fully furnished including several hand-made parota wood tables, large antique copper bowls, a mask collection and original art. Hand-made colorful glass lamps from Guadalajara grace the interior. Both kitchens are fully equipped with modern appliances (Cuisinart food processor, rice cooker, electric hand-mixer, sorbet maker) cutlery etc., everything for those gourmet meals of fish freshly caught by new owners! Towels, linens, and colorful hand-loomed colchas (bedspreads) come with the house, as do a washer and dryer.  Additionally, several U.S.-made sea kayaks and paddles await the interested buyer. And last but not least, a Mexican-plated 2004 Honda Pilot SUV can be negotiated as part of the sale.
